Our Market Differentiators

We are sometimes asked how our ShockWave 3 sound systems differ from that offered by competing suppliers of RC sound systems. Without mentioning specific vendors or products, here's how we differentiate ourselves and our products.

  • Adaptability and Versatility :
    Our ShockWave 3 sound module is incredibly versatile and adaptable. It is able to perform equally well in model airplanes, helicopters, tanks, boats, cars, trucks, electric garden trains, electric bikes, electric motorbikes, electric wheelchairs, static model displays, dioramas and static museum displays.

  • Unparalleled Ease of Use and Flexibility :
    Our firmware and software is packed with features and flexibility. The ShockWave 3 sound module features a micro-USB port to allow it to be connected to a Windows PC. Using the available ShockWave 3 PC Windows Application program you can change/edit the sounds and set a huge number of configurable options yourself. This architecture also makes it possible to add feature enhancements in future firmware and software releases that the user can upgrade to himself.

    Several competing products are not software configurable and use either a pushbutton or DIP switches allowing the user to set a few configuration options. Another competitor's product is software configurable, but his software is hard to use and simplistic in function.

    The ShockWave 3 sound module has a built-in "Bootloader". This means that the application firmware can be upgraded by the end user at any time in the future, making it "future proof".

    We have always had a program of continuous improvement and issue updates to the firmware and software to provide new features. We provide the latest firmware build for download from our web site so you always have access to the very latest features. This way you don't have to wait for the next hardware version to come out!!

    Several competing products are not firmware upgradeable by the end user - they have to be returned to the manufacturer for any firmware upgrades, if even offered.

  • Widest Range of Available Sounds :
    We have been in the RC sound module business since 2006 and have built the largest range of available sounds anywhere - 118 different airplane sounds, 42 helicopter sounds, 59 boat sounds and 13 tank sounds.

    And best of all - An airplane modeler will get all airplane pre-configured sound sets, a helicopter modeler will get all helicopter pre-configured sound sets, a boat modeler will get all boat pre-configured sound sets, and a tank modeler will get all tank pre-configured sound sets included on their ShockWave 3 sound module, all free of charge.

    More than one competitor provides only one airplane sound on their sound modules and another competitor includes only 6-8.

  • Price/Value Ratio :
    Our prices are competitive with the major competition, when taking foreign exchange rates into consideration. However, price alone is not sufficient to make an informed and sensible buying decision. As with anything else, you get what you pay for - pay more and you get more, pay less and you get less.

    There are substantial differences between our high performance ShockWave 3 sound module and those offered by all other vendors. Our premium ShockWave 3 sound module offers very high audio performance and many unique features not available anywhere else. One other competing product has a similar price to the ShockWave 3 but has far lower performance and far fewer features.

  • Huge Digital Sound Storage Capacity :
    Our sound module uses a removable microSD card for sound sample storage which has almost limitless space for storing sound samples. Most competing modules use either a removable memory chip, or a fixed small memory chip, both of which have a much smaller storage capacity. This means our engine sound loops are much longer and our sound module comes with our entire collection of aircraft, or helicopter or tank or boat sound sets.

    We sell additional microSD cards that contain collections of aircraft, helicopter, boat or tank sound sets.

  • Longer Sound loops :
    Because of the huge memory storage space offered by the microSD card, our sounds and sound loops are much longer than most competing units giving more realism and room for tonal variations with time etc. The short time loops used by some competitors have a short repeat time, and of necessity, are therefore somewhat repetitive.

  • Two Independent Engine Sounds :
    Our sound module supports two independent throttle controlled engine sounds. This can therefore support twin engined models with independent throttle control of each engine sound. Our ShockWave 3 sound module is the ONLY RC sound module in the world that supports two throttle controlled engine sounds.

    For model tanks, the second "engine" sound can be used for gun turret turning sounds. For model helicopters the second "engine" sound can be used for additional rotor wash sounds controlled by the collective pitch control on the radio.

  • Widest range of Loudspeaker Sizes :
    More than one competitor bases their entire product range around 2inch or smaller loudspeakers or exciters. The 2inch speakers have a frequency response of around 400 - 8000 Hz. The small cone of the speaker means it cannot reproduce the low bass frequencies that are necessary to effectively reproduce many piston engined airplane sounds. Exciters have a very variable result depending on the material they are attached to.

    Spectrum analysis tests we have done with some airplane engine sounds show considerable energy in the 100-200Hz frequency range. Good low frequency reproduction is necessary to achieve optimum sound for large piston aero engines, especially large radial engines. We do not believe in skimping on loudspeakers. Our recommended 4inch (100mm) loudspeakers have a frequency response of 150-13000 Hz.

    However, if necessary, we can also supply the same 2inch exciters for smaller models.

    At Model Sounds Inc. we offer the widest range of loudspeaker sizes for all sizes of models from small park flyers and small scale boats and tanks to large and giant scale models of all kinds. 5 or 6inch speakers for giant scale models can also be special ordered. We work with you to ensure you choose the right loudspeaker(s) for your specific application.

  • Optimum Lowest Power Consumption at all Voltages :
    Our ShockWave 3 sound module can operate with either 4 Ohm or 8 Ohm loudspeakers. At lower operating voltages, up to 3S LiPo, you use a 4 Ohm loudspeaker to get maximum loudness. At higher operating voltages, 5S or 6S, you use an 8 Ohm loudspeaker which gives maximum efficiency and lower current draw for the same maximum loudness. At 26 Volts, with most sounds, the current draw is only 1-2Amps.

  • Integrated Audio Power Amplifier On-Board :
    Our sound module use an integrated circuit board that includes all electronic components, including the audio power amp.

    More than one competitor uses a separate amplifier board that requires the user to wire to the sound board.

  • Four Flexible Switched Outputs :
    Our ShockWave 3 sound module includes no less than four flexible, programmable, switched outputs that can be used to switch ultra bright LEDs in gun ports or other accessory circuits. They can be configured to flash in synchronism with the gun fire sounds, with engine start-up sounds (for LEDS in scale exhaust ports) or with any of the sounds on the module. Afterburner light sets for model EDF jets are also supported with a built-in flickering afterburner controller.

    They can also be configured to switch statically, e.g. to switch on navigation or landing lights, or can be set as PWM outputs to control a smoker unit fan motor to give smoke volume proportional to throttle position and can also give a burst of smoke at engine start-up.

  • Pre and Post-Sales Support :
    Our pre and post sales support is superb and we entertain making custom audio files. Our track record of pre and post sales support is enviable, as witnessed by our long list of testimonials here. One competitor's after sales service is known to be very variable, while another competitor's service is almost non-existent.

  • Warranty :
    All our products are warranted for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase. One competitor's warranty period is stated as only 30 days, other competitor's warranties are unspecified on their web sites.
